If you're looking for something different to do with friends or the family, the city's night markets are a good place to start.

From rooftop markets and food stalls to live music, local crafts and even a theme park after dark, there's plenty to explore. Some happen every month, while others pop up on selected dates, so there's always something worth keeping an eye on.

Here are seven night markets to check out around Johannesburg this summer.

1. Gold Reef City Theme Park Night Market

Gold Reef City is giving Joburgers a new reason to visit the theme park after dark. The park is opening its gates for special evening experiences, with the next announced dates falling on 6 and 7 November 2026.

It's a fun option for families looking to switch up their usual weekend plans. Instead of spending the day at the park, you can experience the atmosphere at night and enjoy an outing that feels a little different from the usual dinner or movie.

We're still waiting to see whether this will become a regular monthly event, but for now, save those November dates and keep an eye on Gold Reef City's announcements for more details.

2. Fourways Mall Night Market

A rooftop, good food and live entertainment make the Fourways Mall Night Market an easy choice for a Friday evening. The market takes over the mall's Level 7 rooftop parking area, bringing together food vendors, craft stalls, music and activities for children.

It's the kind of outing where everyone can find something to enjoy. The kids can explore the activities, while adults browse the stalls, grab a bite and catch up with friends under the evening sky.

The market takes place on the last Friday of every month, so you can plan around it without waiting for a special occasion.

3. Rooted Night Market at Irene Dairy Farm

If you're up for a little drive outside Johannesburg, Rooted Night Market at Irene Dairy Farm is worth considering. Set among the trees at the farm, this market brings together food, shopping and live music in a relaxed outdoor setting.

You can spend the evening sampling different dishes, browsing stalls and enjoying the atmosphere with family or friends. It's a good excuse to get everyone out of the house and enjoy a different side of Gauteng.

Rooted hosts its night market on selected dates, generally once a month, so check its social pages before making the trip.

4. Fourways Rustic & Gourmet Night Market

The Design Quarter Piazza turns into an outdoor market for the Fourways Rustic & Gourmet Night Market, where local food and independent businesses take centre stage.

Expect gourmet food, handmade products, crafts and other finds from local vendors, with live entertainment adding to the atmosphere. It's a lovely way to support small businesses while discovering something new, whether that's a meal you haven't tried before or a locally made product you didn't know you needed.

The market is particularly appealing if you enjoy taking your time, walking between stalls and making an evening of it rather than rushing through a shopping trip.

5. Randburg Night Market

For those on the Randburg side of town, the Randburg Night Market is another one to add to your calendar. The market brings together food stalls, craft vendors and entertainment, creating a casual space to spend an evening with the family.

Come through for dinner, browse the stalls and enjoy the community atmosphere. Depending on the event, there may also be a theme or live sporting entertainment, so it's worth checking what the organisers have planned.

The published 2026 calendar lists 7 November and 5 December as upcoming market dates.

6. The Bedfordview Night Market

The Bedfordview Night Market is all about bringing the community together over food, shopping and entertainment. You'll find gourmet stalls serving flavours from different parts of the world, handmade crafts and local products, alongside live music.

There's also plenty for younger visitors, including a kids' zone, face painting and stilt walkers at recent editions. It's a good option if you're looking for a market where the whole family can spend a few hours without needing a packed itinerary.

The market returned to Bedfordview in September after spending several months in Edenvale. Its published calendar lists 30 October and 27 November 2026, although it's worth confirming the venue for each date.

7. Alberton Night Market

If you're based in the south of Johannesburg, you don't have to travel to the northern suburbs to find a good night market. The Alberton Night Market at Alberton Football Club is a regular community gathering with food, craft vendors and entertainment.

It's a chance to try different foods, support local sellers and let the kids enjoy an evening out. The market's family-friendly atmosphere makes it a solid option for a weekend outing, especially if you want something relaxed that doesn't involve spending the whole day away from home.

The published calendar lists 7 November and 5 December 2026 as upcoming dates.

From Fourways to Alberton, and out towards Irene, Johannesburg and the surrounding areas have plenty of markets to explore once the sun goes down. Whether you're looking for new food spots, local products or simply a reason to get the family together, these markets make for an easy evening out.

A few of the markets run monthly, while others take place on selected dates. Check their social media pages before heading out to confirm the schedule, entry fees, parking and activities planned for children.
