Hugh’s Jazz Club
The new kid in the city

Sitting on the 13th floor above the city, Hugh’s Jazz Club is the newest kid on the block and a fresh addition to Braamfontein’s nightlife.
At a time when Johannesburg feels short on truly intimate venues, Hugh’s offers something increasingly rare: a place where the night slows down and the focus returns to simply being present.
Instead of building itself around loud crowds and packed bar counters, the space is designed around the stage. Seating naturally faces the performers and, once the music begins, the room shifts. Conversations soften, drinks slow down, and attention turns forward. It feels less like background entertainment and more like a shared listening experience.
Thursday nights anchor the programme with rotating live jazz acts, from contemporary ensembles to classic-leaning quartets, but the scale always stays intimate. You are close enough to hear the texture of instruments, the breathing between notes, and the personality of each set. Even on busier nights it never feels chaotic, just comfortably full.
The drinks list is concise and thoughtful, alongside a small selection of light meals and snacks, enough to settle in without distracting from the music. Most people are not here for a quick round; they stay, moving from one set to the next as the skyline darkens outside the windows.
